I am trying to get all of this out before I permanently block it from my brain, so here we go.
Where the heck are we... Oh Part 2.
Sunday night - your dad went home for some clean clothes and I told him to go ahead and stay there to try and get some sleep. At least one of us needed to have as much rest as possible.
Monday - You were still requiring oxygen on the high flow machine at 8.0 liters a minute, with the mask at night, but it was lower than it was on Sunday night. You slept most of the day, only waking up in short bursts when someone poked you, or when you tied yourself up in knots.
Monday night Dad and I tried to both stay with you. Only one parent was allowed to sleep at a time so we took shifts on who was awake and who slept. I had the 9pm -3am sleep shift. At 3am your dad took over sleeping and I took over watching you. Lets just say, I was tired. I went home at lunch time Tuesday to nap and come back for the afternoon/evening shift.
Tuesday -
More of the same. Since you were too young to really understand that what we need you to do is cough up all the junk in your lungs, we had to do some "CPT" or Chest Physiotherapy - or torture. For your CPT they came in and wrapped this thing around your chest, attached two air tubes, and turned it on. It created vibrations in your chest which basically made you cough and loosen up the junk. You were so exhausted that you didn't even mind it. In fact, you slept through it, and your breathing treatment:
They did another chest X-ray but saw little to no improvement, which was to be expected, since this wasn't going to go away in 24 hours. You got some energy back and we were able to remove the mask again. You slept most of the day and were only awake for short periods of time. They did another chest X-ray, more CPT and breathing treatments, and at some point I think we met the Pulmonogist, who told us that you may or may not have asthma, it may or may not be lifetime, it may or may not be related to allergies, and basically wait and see. It was VERY comforting.....
Tuesday night - Dad went home, I stayed. It was a quiet night, with only 2 interruptions - for vitals and breathing treatments.
Wednesday - Woken up at 6am for bloodwork and another chest X-ray. You were doing a lot better on the oxygen, down to 6.0 liters during the day. We had a lot of visitors at one point and it stressed you out and we had to go backup to 8.0, but you bounced baby pretty quickly. You were FINALLY asking for food! We tried jello and applesauce, you hated them both. Finally we asked the nurses for some yogurt and SUCCESS! You must have eaten 4 yogurts in 12 hours. They were hopefully we could get you off the IV fluid if you were able to start eating on your own. On Wednesday night, Dad stayed and I went home to rest. You were able to sleep without the face mask so you were making small steps of progress!
Thursday morning -
You were woken up over and over again, all night long, to the point where your Dad had a chat with the doctors about it and he put a note in your chart. They drew more blood to test and see if your asthma was allergy induced (it wasn't). Another Chest X-ray. More CPT & breathing treatments (but not as frequent).
You were able to get up out of bed and sit with me for a little while, actually you were asking to get up and be held, which was nice. It'd been days since we were able to do that.
Your nurse on Thursday was great. She decided we were going to knock down your oxygen and see what you did. So she kicked the high-flow machine down to 3.0 liters and YOU HELD STRONG!!! After a few hours, we decided to take you on a wagon ride around the floor. They said movement is the best way to break up all that junk in there, so we did. You couldn't be on the high-flow machine for this walk, so we put you on just the regular flow at 3.0 and you did great! We knew at this point you were turning the corner.
You ate like a champ, asking for yums at every turn and packing away the yogurts. At one point you pulled your cannula off and we decided to see how you did without any help and you did GREAT!
Now all we had to do was hold strong on regular oxygen for the night and we could be moved down to the regular floor!
Thursday night - Dad went home, I stayed with you. A quiet night, you held your sat all night long and slept well, especially after the restless night prior and a very full and happy belly. (And new clean Jams).
Part 3 up next. The light at the end of the tunnel!
